Thank you for considering joining the Students’ Council! For many of you, this will be one of the most fulfilling journeys you can embark on during your time in RI. If you join, you will learn new skills in initiating, planning and executing projects. Apart from exploring creative ways to serve the school meaningfully, we also hope you will realise what it means to be a leader in your own right in our organisation. Not to say the least, you will be surrounded by other like-minded Councillors, who could very well become your closest friends in JC.
This endeavour, first and foremost, is centered around the people in our school community. Each Councillor must seek to create a positive impact on the Institution and the student body, and serve as a leader and representative of his/her peers, aspiring towards excellence. Every Councillor serves a one-year term in either a House Directorate or a Department, and is also part of a committee overseeing the organisation of a school-wide event, called Functions (National Day, Teachers’ Day, Graduation Night, Open House, Orientation and Council Camp).
All applicants must bear in mind that the one-year commitment level is extremely demanding. You should seriously consider whether you are able to juggle the academic workload, commitments to other CCAs, enrichment programmes (if any), and other personal commitments. The duties Councillors undertake are not fixed - it could occur weekly, or even daily in the lead up to important events, alongside the planning and execution of large-scale functions.
Do note that the highest standards of personal conduct and character is expected of every Councillor at all times. Students who are not keen to be held to that kind of expectation should not apply. Please take note that students who are elected President and Vice-Presidents are not allowed to join a second CCA. Additionally, you are not allowed to be in 2 service CCAs. Service CCAs include Interact Club, Red Cross Youth (RI Chapter) and Community Advocates, so if you are in any of these CCAs and intend to apply for Council, please be mindful that you will have to drop this CCA if you are successfully elected.
13 councillors will form the executive committee, consisting of the President, 2 Vice-Presidents, 2 Secretaries, 5 House Captains and 3 Department Heads.
11 other councillors will be Function ICs (2 ICs per function, except for 1 IC for National Day) who are not allowed to take up any EXCO positions.
